As Director of Procurement, Mary Helmick provides leadership and direction to the procurement and surplus property functions at Virginia Tech. This includes providing oversight to the university procurement processes for the effective and efficient acquisition of goods, services, insurance, and the minor and major construction contracts, the surplus property disposal functions, and the supplier diversity program.

Ms. Helmick is also responsible for the effective management of the electronic business system (HokieMart/Jaggaer) that processes transactions destined to commercial and internal university suppliers and to ensure a positive customer-service environment with the Procurement Department and Surplus Property operations to best serve faculty, staff, and students.

Prior to accepting her position with Virginia Tech in 2014, Ms. Helmick served as James Madison University’s director of procurement during a 20 year career at the university. While at JMU, Helmick led an 18-member staff responsible for all university purchases of goods, professional and non-professional services and construction.

She is a member of the Virginia Association of State College and University Procurement Professionals and served as its President from 2009 – 2011 and 2015-2020. She is also a member of the Virginia Association of Government Procurement, National Institute of Government Procurement, and the National Association of Education Procurement. She is a Certified University Procurement Officer (CUPO) by the Virginia Association of State College and University Procurement Professionals.

She received her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Bridgewater College.
