Employee Spotlight: Jordan King

Jordan King

Rotational Finance Fellow,

University Treasury

Jordan recently joined the division as one of our VPF Fellows and is completing her first rotation working with the University Treasury Team. Check out the below Q&A and give her a warm welcome to Virginia Tech and the Division of Finance!

Tell us about what you're currently working on.

With University Treasury, I have been learning about investments and the cash and debt management functions of the university. I look forward to being able to get more into analyzing data as I learn about the university systems – refreshing my SQL skills and gathering an understanding of the university’s data warehouse.

What drew you to Virginia Tech?
I am originally from Fort Chiswell, VA, in Wythe County. I was drawn to Virginia Tech by the great opportunities that it provides so close to home. I also have many friends and family members that work at the university.

What is your favorite . . .

Food: Strawberries! Close contenders are steak, ACP, and any form of potato.
Cereal: Froot Loops
Movie: Disney’s Tangled. I actually walked down the aisle to an instrumental version of I See the Light. It’s just a feel-good movie I can watch over and over again.
Holiday: Christmas! I love giving gifts and trying to find the perfect gift for someone, so Christmas is the perfect time. I also love getting to see all of my family.
Place visited: Charleston, SC. I love the beach, so it is nice to stay in Charleston and visit so many different beaches and still have all the fun things in the city to do as well!

Where have you never been, but would love to visit?
Hawaii!! I feel like it is so beautiful, and I would love to experience the culture and nature there.

When you win the lottery, what’s the first thing you buy?
I would probably buy a beach house!

What one sentence would you most like to hear from your boss tomorrow morning?
“Pack up your things, we’re taking an office trip to the beach!”

And more favorites . . .

Sport: My favorite sport to play is volleyball, but my favorite sport to watch is football. Go Hokies!
Favorite musician or band: I enjoy a wide range of music from bluegrass to pop. Some of my favorite artists include Watchhouse, Billy Strings, The Lumineers, Djo, and Harry Styles.
Hobbies: I love to bake, do home improvement projects, hike, garden, and spend time with my family. My husband and I bought a fixer upper about 2-1/2 years ago and, with the help of our families, gutted it and did a complete renovation. A lot of our free time has been spent working on the house, but we are getting close to having it where we want it to be!

Any pets?
I have a miniature dachshund named Penny who is 3. She is tiny but very fierce and loves to be with her people. I love dogs of all kinds and am always excited to see or meet a new four-legged friend. I also have a beta fish that is named Toby. He is red, white, and blue, so he is named after Toby Keith.

What TV show are you currently watching that others need to check out?
I am currently rewatching New Girl (for my 3rd time), but I recently finished watching the newest seasons of Severance and The Righteous Gemstones.

If you could witness one moment in history, what would it be and why?
The Titanic before its sinking. As a child I was obsessed with the Titanic and would watch any movie, documentary, or read any book I could find about the topic.

What’s one of your weirdest quirks?
When I am eating a meal, I eat one thing at a time: if I have mac and cheese and mashed potatoes, I will eat all of the mac and cheese before I take a bite of the mashed potatoes.

Who is someone that inspires you? How so?
My mom has always inspired me. She is always working so hard and is selfless in the way that she takes care of her family. I am where I am today because of her.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
I would choose to be able to teleport - it would save me so much time and money!

If you could have the answer to one question, what would it be?
What are the winning numbers to the next Mega Millions lottery draw?

In the meantime, what 3 apps do you have to keep on your phone?
Snapchat, TikTok, and Photos

Favorite quote?
“Don’t let perfect become the enemy of good.”
