Employee Spotlight: Drew Nagy

Drew Nagy
Accounting Fellow
Drew joined the division as one of our VPF Accounting Fellows and is completing his first rotation working with Accounts Payable in the Controller's office. Check out the below Q&A and give him a warm welcome to Virginia Tech and the Division of Finance!
What drew you to Virginia Tech?
I’m from Botetourt County, VA, about 45 minutes east of Blacksburg. There’s a lot to love about VT, but I knew I was home when I first got to visit the dining halls!
What is your favorite . . .
Food: A fatty ribeye, medium-rare. Nothing else comes close.
Beverage: Coffee. I know it isn’t unique but I often have 3-4 cups in a day.
Cereal: Reese’s Puffs. Can’t beat peanut butter and chocolate.
Book: “Unbroken” by Laura Hillenbrand. I enjoy WWII history and the story of Louis Zamperini is incredible.
Sports Team: Other than my Hokies, I grew up a big Alabama football fan. My dad went to college there and we watch all the games. Roll Tide!
Holiday: Thanksgiving. Quality time with family and so much great food.
What are your hobbies?
My favorite hobbies are all outdoor activities: fishing, hunting, surfing, kayaking, camping, etc.
What is something outside the office you're passionate about?
I’m passionate about public land management. As someone who enjoys outdoor activities, public places to enjoy them are important to me.
What was your first job?
I was a cook at a Hardee’s that had a reputation for being particularly grody. Great character development.
What's one thing on your bucket list?
In high school I made a business plan for a ride-on lawn mower demolition derby. It would be awesome to make it a reality.
What's your favorite place visited? I have lots of great memories in a small town called Dixon, IL. It’s my dad’s hometown and we used to visit every summer. I loved to fish on the Rock River with my dad and grandpa.
Where have you never been, but would love to visit?
I have an open invitation to visit my cousins in Australia and would love to go surfing and see some kangaroos!
If you could witness one moment in history, what would it be and why?
I want to see how the first people arrived in the Americas. Did they cross the land bridge? Arrive by boat? Dig a tunnel?
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I was certain I’d be a fighter jet pilot.
Who inspires you?
John Daly. He’s far from a role model and I’m not even into golf, but seeing that guy perform at the highest level of the sport is pretty inspirational.
If you could have lunch with any 3 living people, who would you choose and why?
Kelly Slater, Steven Rinella, and Joey Chestnut. I’d love to hear some stories and advice from Slater and Rinella, and would have to go to some sort of buffet with Chestnut to see his skills firsthand.
If you could have the answer to one question, what would it be?
What happened to DB Cooper?
What TV show are you watching that others need to check out?
Not a new one but if you’ve never seen Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives I highly recommend it.
You win the lottery. What’s the first thing you buy?
I think I’d skip the expensive cars, but I’d have to buy some crazy boats.
You can only keep 3 things when stranded on a desert island. What are they?
A fishing rod, a surfboard, and a big bag of coffee.
What’s one of your weirdest quirks?
My friends find it weird I’ll eat 6 over-easy eggs at a time.
What sentence would you most like to hear from your boss tomorrow morning?
You’re being tasked with organizing a water balloon battle today.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
The power to not stain my shirts!
