Michael “Mike” Walsh has almost 25 years of experience working in public finance. Currently, he is the Assistant Vice President for Finance and Associate Treasurer at Virginia Tech. Reporting to the vice president for finance and chief financial officer, Walsh provides oversight to the Office of the University Treasury. He has experienced a full range of public finance issues including negotiated and competitive sales, private placements, variable and fixed rate issues, new money and refunding transactions, tax-exempt and taxable issues, as well as the use of swaps and public private partnerships.
Prior to joining Virginia Tech, Walsh worked at the Virginia Department of Treasury and ran the Virginia College Building Authority, a conduit issuer for higher ed institutions in Virginia. He also worked at another R1 research institution in Virginia where he oversaw the investment and debt functions.
Walsh also developed a finance course in the Pamplin College of Business which he taught for eight years.
He is a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and has an MBA, with a concentration in finance, from Virginia Commonwealth University.
