Jim Hillman

Jim Hillman became chief of staff for the Division of Finance in November 2025.

In his role, Hillman works with Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer Simon Allen and division leadership to provide operational excellence and programmatic oversight of enterprise-level strategic planning, division wide program implementation, performance metrics and reporting, business operations, policy development and compliance, and organizational effectiveness.

Hillman previously served as senior director of finance and business analytics in the Division of Auxiliary and Business Services. In that role, he led programmatic activities around budget development and administration, data analysis, financial reporting, business planning and development, and the division’s overall operations.  

Hillman first joined Virginia Tech in 2009 and has worked closely with the finance division in financial and administrative roles spanning university operations. He previously worked in the Office of Budget and Financial Planning and also with teams from sponsored programs, facilities, and public safety.

Hillman holds an MBA from Radford University and a bachelor’s degree in finance and human resource management from Virginia Tech, where he also earned a graduate certificate in public and nonprofit financial management.
